Kansas State Wildcats Markquis Nowell Jerome Tang NCAA Tournament

With a run to the Elite Eight behind an exciting offense, the Kansas State Wildcats stole the show during #FastModelMadness23.

Led by guard Markquis Nowell, head coach Jerome Tang’s Kansas State team became one of the tournament darlings, not to mention bracket busters, last month. Along with great dance moves and high-flying dunks, the Wildcats also presented us some of the best XsOs of the 2023 men’s NCAA Tournament. I specifically was impressed with the Wildcats’ 4-High series of which there are so many variations to play with. Let’s take a look!

Weave Chin Lob

Fans got off their seat early with this alley-oop play for KSU’s Keyontae Johnson. Side note: It was assist #1 of 19 for Nowell, an NCAA Tournament record for the 2023 March Madness darling.

Things start with a weave to shift the defense (Frame 1). The 5 moves towards the elbow when Johnson passes back to Nowell. It finishes with a back screen at the elbow for the lob over the top (Frame 2).

4-High Iverson Middle Ball Screen

I talked all tournament on my Twitter account about the inventive ways teams are getting to a middle ball screen. This is yet another example of using creative pre-actions to finish with that PnR.

The 3 cuts over top of the 5 and 4. Then 4 moves over the top of 5 to the corner (Frame 1). 5 then sets a middle ball screen for 1. On the roll by 5, 2 lifts behind the drive for a kick back pass from 1 (Frame 2).
